Łupawa – moderately difficult section (Damno – Smołdzino)

Łupawa – moderately difficult section (Damno – Smołdzino)

You start you trip in Damno and paddle to Smołdzino. It is suitable for experienced kayakers. The river current features many obstacles such as fallen trees and stones. Additionally, it is burdensome due to the hydroelectric power stations (EW Drzeżewo, EW Żelkowo, EW Smołdzino) and weirs (some of them of double type). After Damno, the Łupawa finally changes into a “lowland” river. There are no more rapids, boulders or shallows, the current is fairly fast but regular and trees rarely obstruct the entire width of the riverbed. The nature of the land surrounding the river also changes and becomes dominated by meadows, fields and smaller woods. After the road bridge in Drzeżewo, you have to cross the last gorge of the Łupawa River, which breaks through the moraine formations of the Chocimirowskie Hills. The high banks are again dominated by a tall forest, the current speeds up and some boulders and rapids appear. From Żelkowo onwards, the Łupawa River flows quite briskly amidst beautiful meadows, allowing you to move forward quickly with the current. As you approach Smołdzino, Rowokół (115 m ASL), the holy mountain of the Slovincians, appears on the horizon. You reach Smołdzino and there is the last hydroelectric power station you have to cross.
