The Opływ Motławy – easy section (Motława Flow Round)

Section length: 8 km

It is best to start your trip down the Opływ Motławy at the Kamienna Grodza lock and finish at the AZS AWFiS sports club rowing marina at the Siennicki Bridge. The route is easy and not demanding. The Opływ Motławy is part of a larger looped route known as Gdańsk by Kayak. The Opływ Motławy itself is a remnant of the 17th century water structure regulating the water level in the moats surrounding the city. Along the moats you can see bastions dating back to the 17th century, where two of them, found in the western part of the moat, have survived complete. At the beginning of the route, you reach the Kamienna Grodza Lock, on the wall of which there is a “big water mark”, showing the level reached by the water in April 1829 during one of the biggest floods in the history of Gdansk. If the gates are open, go ahead without hesitation, leaning slightly under the gate. If they are closed, portage is necessary. After passing the lock, turn left. In summer, the channel may be overgrown. On the way, you pass the buildings of the Lower Town and the nearby monuments. While kayaking, you also pass bastions of the fortifications. The route reaches the flood gate at Elbląska Street (a busy road); if it is open, you go across it. But it can also be closed due to high water levels. If this is the case, you carry your kayaks across the pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights (2 stages). An unusual view. Then, continue along the canal to its mouth at the Martwa Wisła. The route goes past marinas and out onto the Martwa Wisła River. Your kayaking trip ends at the Siennicki Bridge on the AZS AWFiS sports club rowing platform.
